「ほのめかす」（hint/imply/implicate/insinuate/infer）

さて、今回は、「ほのめかす」を意味する英単語のニュアンスの違いについて調べてみます。

◾hint（考えていることを間接的に言葉や行動でほのめかす）
意味：
something that you say or do in an indirect way in order to show sb what you are thinking
例文：
He gave a broad hint that he was thinking of retiring.
(彼は引退を考えていることは明らかだった)

◾imply（事実、感情、考えをほのめかす）
意味：
to suggest that sth is true or that you feel or think sth, without saying so directly
to make it seem likely that sth is true or exists
例文：
The fact that she was here implies a degree of interest.
（彼女がここにいたことからある程度関心があることがわかる）
Your silence implies tacit consent to these proposal.
（黙っていると、暗黙のうちにこれらの提案に同意したことになる）

上記の hint や imply は広く使うことができそうですが、次のimplicateやinsinuateは、状況が限られているので注意する必要があります。

◾implicate（悪いことや犯罪に関与していること、またはその原因になっていることをほのめかす）
意味：
to show or suggest that sb is involved in sth bad or criminal
to show or suggest that sth is the cause of sth bad
例文：
He tried to avoid saying anything that would implicate him further.
(これ以上不利になることは言わないようにした)
new evidence that implicated her in the murder
(彼女が殺人犯であることを示す新しい証拠)

◾insinuate（不愉快なことをほのめかす）
意味：
to suggest indirectly that sth unpleasant is true
例文：
The article insinuated that he was having an affair with his friend's wife.
（その記事は彼が友人の妻と不倫していることを暗示していた）

また、次のinfer は、本来、情報や状況から「推測する / 察する」という意味なのですが、和英辞典で「ほのめかす」と入力すると、inferが引っかかってくることがあります。これは、"Are you inferring that I'm a liar?"（私がウソをついているとでも言うの？） のように、inferをimplyと同様に使うことも日常ではよくあるから、という理由のようです。
でも、これはフォーマルな表現ではありません。
hint / imply（ほのめかす） と infer（推測する） は、本来使い方が大きく違うことをきちんと理解しておいたほうが良さそうです。

◾infer（事実や情報に基づいて物事を推測する）
意味：
to reach an opinion or decide that sth is true on the basis of information that is available
(non-standard)to suggest indirectly that sth is true
例文：
It is reasonable to infer that the government knew about these deals.
（政府がこれらの取引を知っていたと考えるほうが妥当だ）
If he is guilty the, by inference, so is his wife.
(彼が有罪なら、妻も有罪だと考えられる)
